What BMI is not telling you

The Body Mass Index (BMI) has been the gold standard in diagnosing obesity. It is a calculated ratio of our height and weight as:

We can also follow the chart to find out our BMI:

The ratio is then categorized into underweight, healthy, overweight, obese, and extremely obese.

Although BMI is used widely in the medical field, it does not take into account factors like our body fat, hydration, lean mass which give us a better reflection of a person's health.

For example, actor John Travolta and soccer mega star Cristiano Ronaldo are both 188cm tall and 87kg (after John's recent successful weight loss). They both have the same BMI of 24, but they have extremely different physique.

It is useful to find out your body's composition through a health care professional (book your body analysis with us here). Learn about how much lean mass you have, how much fat is in the body, your hydration level can help you understand the direction of achieving healthy weight goal.

So, don't be frustrated when your BMI is on the overweight side. Pay more attention to the actual composition of your body. Watch out for high body fat percentage which leads to multiple health risks like heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and even cancer.
